Disappointing Buatsi Outpoints Parker in Manchester

Joshua Buatsi boxing action

British light heavyweight Joshua Buatsi made a winning yet unimpressive debut to life under fresh promotional backing with a decision win over Zach Parker in Manchester.

The Olympic medal winner's activity level likely gained him a majority decision in a tight ten-round contest at the Co-op Live Arena.

But Parker found success, connecting with powerful clean blows in a match where the techniques never quite clicked, with constant grabbing marring the action.

The scoring judges scored it 96-94 in favor to Buatsi, with the final judge a 95-95.

"It wasn't my best display but what defines champions? They prevail," the victor stated in the ring as he was met by negative reactions from the spectators.

The British fighter bounced back after his initial pro loss - an thrilling contest with Callum Smith in last winter - to secure a 20th pro success.

Various analysts felt Parker, thirty-one, merited the decision but the British boxer experienced the second setback of his 28-fight career.

His career development has slowed in the past few years through promotional disputes and considerable time of lack of fights.

Previously predicted as the next star of the British fight scene, he now finds himself trying to achieve expectations - perhaps in what appears to be a ultimate opportunity - under recent support.

He started carefully, with the two boxers ready to take risks in a cagey initial rounds.

Parker, whose sole prior loss came at super-middleweight against John Ryder in two years ago after breaking his hand during the bout, was participating in his second bout at light heavyweight.

By the fight's midpoint, the underdog had made it competitive, creating difficulties for Buatsi, who operated with a tight guard to narrowly win the more effective rounds.

The spectators' acceptance wore thin amid frequent holding, with Parker slipping to the canvas various instances during grappling.

Parker finished the stronger, but multiple periods were difficult to score. However, previous titleholder Carl Frampton - commentating on the broadcast network - had it significantly in favor for the challenger, giving Buatsi just only one stanza.

The victor moves on, but with the caliber of heavy hitter David Benavidez, and Russian champion Dmitry Bivol leading the category, the journey to titles - on this evidence - still appears challenging.

Hatton Tribute Motivates All-Manchester Contest

In the secondary fight, Arthur overcame Bradley Rea by divided decision in a excellent local rivalry contest to capture the European light heavyweight championship.

The stadium grew hushed for a profoundly moving homage prior to the bout as ten bells rang in memory of Manchester's own Ricky Hatton, who succumbed at age 46 in recently.

It was the premier televised match card in the urban center since the passing of Hatton. As the last bell disappeared, the quiet became a chant of "there's just one Hatton".

The fighting within the ring matched the sentiment. The eventual winner was floored by a powerful punch directly to the jaw in the second round, getting up unsteadily to his footing on the eight count.

But the Manchester United-red shorts of the fighter soon advanced again. Across the ring, Rea - in opposing blue - was damaged quickly, significant bruising appearing under his orbital area as the fighters traded punishing blows.

Rea, twenty-seven, connected with strong blows but the champion, thirty-four, matched the intensity with powerful upward punches as the action hardly diminished over 12 rounds.

The victor narrowly won the decision with judges scorecards of even score, close margin and 115-112, but both fighters were relentless and full of heart, everything their inspiration the legend represented.
